Northumberland Mom & Baby Group
Having a baby is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences in a woman’s life. However, it can also be a time filled with feelings of loneliness, isolation, and uncertainty. During this period, having a support network—people to talk to, spend time with, and help you get out of the house—can be crucial in helping you feel like yourself again and adjusting to your new reality.
When Dr. Johnston was on maternity leave with her daughters, she participated in a mom & baby group that provided her with the opportunity to leave the house, meet other mothers with similarly aged babies, and remain engaged with the community while caring for her children. Dr. Johnston now leads this mom & baby group to ensure that other mothers can enjoy similar benefits.
The Northumberland Mom & Baby Group is an informal gathering for mothers with babies aged 0-18 months (the typical duration of maternity leave in Ontario). We meet weekly at various locations, often at The Mill Restaurant, for an hour and a half. Dr. Johnston frequently invites guest speakers to present on topics relevant to mothers, families, babies, mental health, and more. This year, we’ve had presentations from a doula who demonstrated infant massage techniques, a Naturopathic Doctor who discussed postpartum hormones and infant feeding, a Montessori teacher, a family therapist, a professional organizer, and an esthetician. We also occasionally include music and dance classes, as well as exercise-themed sessions. Each 6-week session concludes with a professional photoshoot for mom and baby.
Feedback from the mothers who have participated in the group has been overwhelmingly positive. They appreciate having a relaxed, non-judgmental space where they can meet, enjoy a coffee, and engage in conversation. It’s heartwarming to see the friendships that have formed, and how their babies are growing up together. In addition to providing social support, we also share practical advice on feeding, sleeping, introducing solid foods, recommended products, daycare, community events, and professionals who have been helpful during challenging stages of development.
